The peripheries (περιφέρειες) are the subnational subdivisions of Greece. There are 13 peripheries (nine on the mainland and four island groups), which are further subdivided into 51 prefectures of Greece.
In addition to there these there is one autonomous region, Mount AthosMount Athos is a mountain and a peninsula in Macedonia, northern Greece, called Ayio Oros or "Holy Mountain") in Modern Greek, or Ἅ Ὄ Hagion Oros in Classical Greek.
