Perlin noise is a function which uses an interpolation function to combine noise-generating function s, and has been used to produce natural textures on computer-generated objects for motion pictures special effects.

It resulted from the work of Ken Perlin who won a special academy award for Perlin noise. Which came after Tron was denied an academy award for special effects because it "cheated" by using computer generated effects.

Perlin noise is widely used in games for effects like fire, smoke and clouds. It is also frequently used to generate textures when space is needed(Perlin invented it to generate textures for tron).
