PmWiki is designed to be extremely easy to install and to customize as an engine for creating professional web sites. The software is focused on ease of use by naive authors in order to eliminate all barriers that might keep people with little IT experience from using a Wiki.
PmWiki offers a template scheme that makes it possible to change user surface with a high degree of flexibility both with regard to functionality and with regard to external appearance.
An important feature of PmWiki is the capability to establish password protection for individual pages or groups of pages, for example to establish defined zones for collaborative work by certain groups, for example in a company intranet. Access control is by passwords alone, PmWiki does not offer a fully-featured user administration.
Password protection can be applied to reading, editing, uploading to and changing passwords for the restricted zone. No password protection can be applied to the download of uploaded files so that PmWiki is not well suited for use in a possibly hostile environment where hacking attacks have to be considered.
PmWiki was written by Patrick Michaud (who also owns the PmWiki trademark).
