There have been at least two releases of Pokémon Pikachu. The first is simply called Pokémon Pikachu, and the second is called Pokémon Pikachu 2 GS and can interact with Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal via the Game Boy Color's Infrared Communication Port and Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal's Mystery Gift option.

Both of the Pokémon Pikachu incarnations differ slightly from more traditional portable virtual pets in that Pikachu does not need to be fed, watered, or cleaned up after. Instead, the Pokémon Pikachu unit can be strapped to a belt and uesed as a pedometer. With every step it counts, the Pokémon Pikachus Trainer earns "watts," which are used to buy the Pikachu presents and grow closer to it. Both Pokémon Pikachu incarnations feature the Pikachu doing different activities — more are earned as the Pikachu grows closer to its Trainer.
