The Polish Navy (Polska Marynarka Wojenna, PMW) is the Navy of Poland.The independent kingdom maintained a fleet until Poland was partitioned at the end of the 18th century (the biggest victory was the battle of Oliwa in 1627).
The modern navy was created 28 November 1918 by order of Joseph Pilsudski, with Captain Bogumil Nowotny as its first chief.

Just before an outbreak of the World War IIWorld War II was the most extensive and costly armed conflict in the history of the world, involving the great majority of the world's nations, being fought simultaneously in several major theatres, and costing tens of millions of lives. The Polish Navy fought alongside the allied navies, including fighting against the Bismarck.
As of 2003 the Navy has 149 ships.
The traditional ship prefix in the Polish Navy is ORP - "the Ship of the Polish Republic".
