A polygon (from the Greek poly, for "many", and gonos, for "angle") is a closed planar path composed of a finite number of sequential straight line segments. The straight line segments that make up the polygon are called its sides or edges and the points where the sides meet are the polygon's vertices. If a polygon is simple, then its sides (and vertices) constitute the boundary of a polygonal region, and the term polygon sometimes also describes the interior of the polygonal region (the open area that this path encloses) or the union of both the region and its boundary.

1 Names and types

Polygons are named according to the number of sides, combining a Greek root with the suffix -gon, e.g. pentagon, dodecagon. The triangle and quadrilateral are exceptions. For larger numbers, mathematicians write the numeral itself, eg 17-gon. A variable can even be used, usually n-gon. This is useful if the number of sides is used in a formula.

Polygon names
Name Sides

quadrilateral (or tetragon) 4
pentagon 5
hexagon 6
heptagon (avoid "septagon") 7
octagonAn octagon is a polygon that has eight sides. The internal angles of a regular octagon is 135 °. The shape of a "STOP" sign is a regular octagon, as this makes it easy to recognise even when it is covered in dirt or snow. In architecture, an octagon house 8
enneagonIn geometry, an enneagon or nonagon is a nine-sided polygon. The two different names are similarly derived: enneagon is derived from Greek enneagonon (εννεα, nine + γωνον, corner ; nonagon is borrowed (avoid "nonagon") 9
decagonA decagon is a polygon with ten sides and ten angles. The decagon is the largest polygon that exists in the Archimedean solids. The measure of each angle of a decagon is 144 degrees. See also geometry, decagonal number pentagon, hexagon, octagon Polygons. 10
hendecagonA hendecagon is an 11-sided polygon. Undecagon is incorrect — the prefix is properly Greek, not Latin. A regular hendecagon has internal angles of 147. 2727 degrees. The interior design of the (US coin) Susan B. Anthony silver dollar is a hendecagon. (avoid "undecagon") 11
dodecagon (avoid "duodecagon") 12
triskaidecagonA triskaidecagon is a polygon with 13 sides and angles. The measure of each internal angle of a regular triskaidecagon is approximately 152. 308 degrees. The current flag of the country Bahrain has a red field that is a triskaidecagon. Polygons. 13
