On 29 June 1880, he was forced to ceed Tahiti and her dependencies to FranceThe French Republic or France ( French: Republique francaise or France is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in western Europe, and which is further made up of a collection of overseas islands and territories located in other continents.. He recieved the position as Officer of the Orders of the Legion of Honour and Agricultural Merit of France .

He died at the Royal Palace, Papeete and is buried at Tomb of the King, Utu'ai'ai, Arue)
