The Pontiac 6000 was a conservatively styled, midsized family sedan introduced by Pontiac for the 1982 model year. It shared its A-Body platform with the Buick Century, Chevrolet Celebrity, and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. All of them were built in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In 1983, Pontiac added the STE ("Special Touring Edition") variant to the 6000 line, which transformed it into a road car capable of competing with sports sedans from abroad. Along with the STE badge came a stiffer suspension with air-adjustable rear shocks, quick-ratio steering, upgraded wheels and tires, and sportier cosmetic touches. Yearly updates kept the 6000 competitive. The 1988-1989 STE was available with a rare All Wheel Drive option with electronic locking hubs, but only with the V6. Although the STE was dropped after 1989, the AWD was available in the S/E trim for 1990 with the new 3.1L V6. Only 1700 AWD models were produced between 1988 and 1990. Production of the 6000 ended on May 17, 1991 when it was replaced by a four-door version of the Pontiac Grand Prix.
