The English name "Port Nicholson" was given to the harbour at the south-west end of the North Island of New Zealand. It became the focus of the Wellington planned settlement in 1840.

The Maori transliteration is " Poneke ", but modern speakers prefer the earlier name "Whanganui-a-tara" (which is sometimes spelt without hyphens).

The landlocked south-west corner, where the major Port of Wellington facilities are, is known as "Lambton Harbour".
