Port Vila (population 34,000) is the capital city of Vanuatu. Situated on the south coast of the island of Efate, it has the country's most important harbour and airport, making it the nation's economic and commercial centre.

During World War II, Port Vila was an American airbase. In 1987, a cyclone severely damaged the city.

(Port Vila should not be confused with Vila, site of a Japanese airstrip in the Solomon Islands during WWII.)
