Prerendered objects in video games are rendered by the creator of the game while it is being made. This is as opposed to most 3d objects, which are rendered as you watch. The survival horror genre of video games frequently uses prerendered backgrounds to create intricately detailed backgrounds. By taking the load of rendering these backgrounds off of the CPU, the game can feature more intricate 3d models (characters, enemies, weapons, items, etc).
