The current president is Svetozar Marovic of Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro. He is the first president of new state union inaugurated on March 7 2003.

The President's incumbencies are:

• to represent country at home and abroad
• to chair the Council of Ministers
• to proposes the composition of the Council of Ministers to the parliament
• to appoint and recall heads of diplomatic and consular missions
• to receive letters of credence and recall from foreign diplomatic representatives
• to confer medals and other decorations
• to promulgates laws passed by the Assembly of Serbia and Montenegro
• to call for elections for the Assembly of Serbia and Montenegro

The President of Serbia and Montenegro is a member of the Supreme Defence Council together with President of Serbia and President of Montenegro.
