The Presidio was originally a Spanish fort sited by Juan Bautista de Anza on March 28, 1776 built by a party led by Josef Joachin Moraga later that year. Until its closure in 1994, it was the longest continuously operated military base in the United States.
Lucas Arts is building the new headquarters of Industrial Light and Magic at the Presidio. After competing with several entities in a tight competition for this valuable land, George Lucas won the development rights in June 1999 to relocate on 23 acres (93,000 m²) of the Presidio.
