On January 29, 1863, summoned by Mormon settlers, California volunteers stationed at Fort Douglas (then Camp Douglas) near Salt Lake City, Utah under the command of Colonel Patrick Edward Conner attacked a band of Shoshone at the confluence of Bear River and Beaver Creek.
