Private equity is a branch of finance.Private equity deals with equity capital which is made available to companies or investors but is not quoted on a stock market.
Most US private equity firms manage a fund raised from third parties. In the case of the third parties being individuals, they typically require them to have a net worth exceeding $1 million USD.
Private equity is a term of art that came around in the early to mid 1990s in reaction to the negativity associated with venture capital investing and buyouts after the crash of 1987. It generally includes Venture Capital Firms, Buyout Firms (leveraged and non leveraged), Private Debt Firms, and many Merchant Banking groups.
