Based on the parallax of 772.33 ± 2.42 milliarcsec measured by Hipparcos, Proxima Centauri is roughly 4.22 light years from Earth (39.9 Pm), 270,000 times more distant than the Sun.
In 2002, VLTI used optical interferometry to measure the angular diameterThe angular diameter of an object as seen from a given position is the diameter measured as an angle. It satisfies the formula. In astronomy the size of objects in the sky are often measured in terms of their angular diameter as seen from Earth, rather th of Proxima Centauri as 1.02 ± 0.08 milliarcsec. Knowing its distance, the actual diameter can be determined to be about 1/7 that of the Sun, or 1.5 times that of Jupiter. The mass is also about 1/7 that of the Sun, or 150 times that of Jupiter.
Its apparent magnitudeThe apparent magnitude m of a star, planet or other heavenly body is a measure of its apparent brightness; that is, the amount of light received from the object. Hundred times less bright (e. the same object ten times as far) corresponds to an apparent ma is 11 (very weak, as red dwarfs in general are: far too weak to be observable with the naked eye). Proxima Centauri was discovered in 1915 by Robert Innes while he was Director of the Union ObservatoryUnion Observatory was an astronomical observatory at Johannesburg in South Africa. It was known as Republic Observatory after 1961. It went through a number of name changes: Transvaal Meteorological Department 1903 1909 Transvaal Observatory 1909 1912 Uni in JohannesburgJohannesburg is the most populous city in South Africa, and the second most populous in Sub-Saharan Africa behind Lagos. Local residents refer to the city as "Jo'burg," or "Jozi. The Zulu name for the city is "Egoli," which means "place of gold" as forty, South AfricaSouth Africa is a republic at the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered to the north by Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, to the north-east by Mozambique and Swaziland. Lesotho is contained entirely inside the borders of South Africa. South Africa is one o.
Proxima Centauri has often been suggested as a logical first destination for interstellar travelInterstellar space travel is unmanned or manned travel between stars, though the term usually denotes the latter. The concept of interstellar travel in starships is a staple in science fiction. There is a tremendous difference between interstellar travel.
Proxima Centauri is about 13,000 astronomical units away from Alpha Centauri (this is about 2 Pm, or 0.2 light years, or about 1/20 of the distance between Alpha Centauri and the Sun) and may be in orbit about it, with a period on the order of 500,000 years or more. For this reason, Proxima is sometimes referred to as Alpha Centauri C. However, it is not clear if it really is in orbit, although the association is unlikely to be entirely accidental as it shares approximately the same motion through space as the larger star system. From Earth's vantage point Proxima is separated by 2 degrees from Alpha Centauri (about 4 times the angular diameter of the full Moon).
