The Panjab University (previously named University of the Punjab) was founded initially in 1882 at Lahore as the fourth teaching and affiliating University on the Indian Subcontinent under British rule (after the Universities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras) . After partition and initial dislocation, the University shifted to Chandigarh in 1956.
It is not to be confused with Punjabi University, Patiala and the current University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan.
