The zine was establised around ten years ago in a response to the perception that Maximum Rock N Roll was becoming too elitist. As of November 2004 Punk Planet has printed 64 copies of their zine, and has recently started selling books, as well as more general merch .
Like the other big national US fanzine - Maximum Rock N Roll - Punk Planet is not without it's detractors. Many complain about it's square spine , high advertising rates, high price, and the fact the percieved over-attention to layout and style, which has to a certain extent moved it away from the traditional punk aesthetic.
