Purgatorio is the middle portion of the Divine Comedy by Dante, in which he describes his epic imaginary journey through Purgatory, the place where in Catholic tradition the souls of persons neither virtuous enough to enter heaven or sufficiently sinful to be sentenced to eternal hell would be temporarily punished and purged of their sins, hence the name.
