Putnam County is a county located in the U.S. State of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 36,019. The name is in honor of Israel Putnam, who was a hero in the French and Indian War and a general in the American Revolutionary War. The county's county seat is Greencastle, Indiana 6.

1 Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,250 km˛ (483 mi˛). 1,244 km˛ (480 mi˛) of it is land and 6 km˛ (2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 36,019 people, 12,374 households, and 9,119 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km˛ (75/mi˛). There are 13,505 housing units at an average density of 11/km˛ (28/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.87% White, 2.93% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,374 households out of which 34.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.40% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 13.20% from 18 to 24, 29.20% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 108.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,882, and the median income for a family is $45,916. Males have a median income of $31,989 versus $22,029 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,163. 8.00% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.30% of those under the age of 18 and 10.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
