In the DOS times, Quarterdeck made the excellent QEMM memory manager for DOS, which could free a lot more conventional memory than the DOS EMM could, and provided support for extended and expanded memory.
Also, if you ran QEMM, you could run DesqView, which was a "multitasking for DOS" product. Compared to today's multitaskers, it was extremely primitive, but it worked with very little resources.
