Quetzalcoatlus was a Pterosaur with a wingspan of 12 m (40 feet) and a weight of only about 50 kg (110 pounds) that lived during the late Cretaceous Period. It was the largest animal ever to fly under its own power. Its name comes from Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec Feathered Serpent deity.

Quetzalcoatlus fossils have been found in the Big Bend area of Texas. During the Cretaceous, Texas' climate was similar to a modern wetland. Paleontologists theorize that Quetzalcoatlus may have lived like a modern crane or stork, since its hip is adapted for bipedal locomotion. They may have eaten carrion like a vulture, or perhaps plucked mollusks from the mud of river floodplains with their beaks.
