The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing and dinghy racing. A new revision is published every four years by the International Sailing Federation, the world governing body for the sport. The current edition came into effect on 1 April 2001.The new rules (2005–2008) will come into effect on 1 January 2005. The fundemental principle of these rules is that when a competitor breaks a rule he/she will take a penalty (usually in the form of turns or retiring from the race).
