It houses approximately a four-hundred patients who have been detained under the Mental Health Act for one of the following classications:
They must also have been determined to be too much of a risk to themselves and others to be held in a less secure unit.
About a quarter of the patients are not criminals, merely those who have been detained under the Mental Health Act for the protection of themselves and others. The other three-quarters are convicted criminals who have been declared mentally ill under the above requirements either upon conviction or after it.
Some of Britain's most dangerous murderers are held at Rampton, including Mark Rowntree and Beverley Allitt.
It has a staff of approximately 1,400.
