Richard Errett Smalley (born June 6, 1943) is a professor of chemistry at Rice University. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996 for discovery of fullerene (with Robert Curl, also a professor of chemistry at Rice, and Harold Kroto, a professor at the University of Sussex). He was born in Akron, Ohio and attended Hope College before tranferring to the University of Michigan where he received his B.S. in 1965. He received his Ph.D from Princeton UniversityPrinceton University located in Princeton, New Jersey, is one of the eight Ivy League universities. Widely considered one of the world's most prestigious universities, it was founded as the "College of New Jersey" in 1746, and was originally located in El in 1973.He is currently working on carbon nanotubes and associated nanotechnologiesNanotechnology as a collective term refers to technological developments on the nanometre scale, usually 0. One nanometre equals one thousandth of a micrometre or one millionth of a millimetre. The term sometimes applies to any microscopic technology.. He is an outspoken critic of the idea of molecular nanotechnologyMolecular Nanotechnology (MNT) is nanotechnology using " molecular manufacturing", an anticipated technology based on positionally-controlled mechanosynthesis guided by molecular machine systems. It involves combining physical principles demonstrated by c.
