In the fictional universe of the Stargate SG-1 television series, the "SG" designation denotes that the team is a part of the Stargate program, while the number following the Stargate designation is to distinguish between separate Stargate teams. Certain teams have special duties within the Stargate program. Listed below are some of the special designation teams noted thus far in the series: Special Team Designations :
- SG-1 - Originally led by Colonel Jack O'Neill. The flagship team.
- SG-2 - Originally led by Major Charles Kawalsky. Later led by Majors Ferretti, Coburn and Griff.
- SG-3 - Ogirinally a Marine combat unit, initially led by Colonel Makepeace. Later led by Majors Castleman and Warren. Now led by Air Force Colonel Reynolds.
- SG-4 - Russian team led by Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Ivanov.
- SG-5 - Marine combat unit. Now led by Harper.
- SG-6 - Possibly originally a medical team, but now just a regular unit.
- SG-7 - Scientific Corps.
- SG-8 - Medical team.
- SG-9 - Originally led by Captain Jonas Hanson. Later becomes the Diplomatic Corps, led by attorney Major Stan Kovachek. Still latter led by Major Benton.
- SG-10 - Originally led by Major Henry Boyd.
- SG-11 - Engineering Corps. Initially led by Captain Conner. Later led by Major Hawkins and now led by Colonel Edwards.
- SG-12 - Scout unit.
- SG-13 - Led by Colonel Dixon.
- SG-14 - Diplomatic team, Originally led by Major Graham.
- SG-15 - Led by Major Pierce.
- SG-16 - Originally led by Colonel Reynolds
- SG-17 - Originally led by Major Mansfield.
- SG-X - Not part of the USAF, but a group of human slaves under training by jaffa in service to Apophis to infiltrate Earth.
Teams designated SG-18 through SG-21 also exist, but have not appeared often.
