San Diego County is a county located on the Pacific Ocean in the far southwest of California, along the border with Mexico. It is the third largest county by population in the state. As of 2000 the population is 2,813,833. The county seat is San Diego.
The San Diego area is one of the fastest growing areas in the state.
The county began with the founding of Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769.
San Diego County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Parts of the county were given to Riverside County in 1893 and to Imperial County in 1907.
