As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 44,174 people, 18,639 households, and 7,697 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,600.0/km² (4,144.5/mi²). There are 19,306 housing units at an average density of 699.3/km² (1,811.3/mi²). The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the city the population is spread out with 14.2% under the age of 18, 33.6% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 16.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.3 males.

San Luis Obispo is also home to California Polytechnic State University, or Cal Poly SLO for short. Cal Poly is home to approximately 20,000 students working on degrees ranging from Computer Science and Architecture to Mechanical Engineering and Animal Science .
