Shelton Jackson Lee (born March 20, 1957), better known as Spike Lee, is an African-American film director and actor noted for his bold, overtly political films.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was still very young. He developed his film skills at Morehouse College, Atlanta and the New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts, graduating in 1982.

In Paris, France, in 2003, Mr. Lee received an honorary Cesar Award for Lifetime Achievement in the film industry.

In 2003 Lee sued the Spike TVSpike TV is the new name of the TNN cable network. Originally, this was The Nashville Network with country programming such as The Dukes of Hazzard''. Since the late '90s, it was The National Network or The New TNN after being acquired by Viacom. The prog television network claiming that they were capitalizing on his fame by using his name for their network. The claim was settled out of court.

His production company is 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks is the production company of noted African American filmmaker Spike Lee (born 1957). Lee chose to name his production company after something that African Americans felt that they had been promised, " Forty acres and a mule", a, named after the " 40 acres and a mule40 acres and a mule is the colloquial term for compensation that was to be awarded to freed American slaves after the Civil War—40 acres of land to farm, and a mule with which to drag a plow so the land could be cultivated. The election of Lincoln, who staunchly opposed the expansion of slavery, polarized the nation promised to each former slave.
