Springfield is a city in the western part of the State of Massachusetts. It is the county seat of Hampden County 6. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 152,082. But a July 1, 2002 Census estimate put the city's population at 151,915. Nevertheless, this is the largest (and also historically the first) city called Springfield in the United States. It is also the largest city on the Connecticut River and the third largest city in Massachusetts.

1 History

Springfield was founded by William Pynchon with colonists from RoxburyRoxbury is a neighborhood within Boston, Massachusetts. It was one of the first towns founded in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630 and became a city in 1848. The City of Roxbury was annexed to Boston in 1868.
