Shmaryhu Zamerth: code name “Zlopah” (Eel) and “Miyohas” (the privileged). Born USA 1910, Died 1965 Israel.In the Mossad 1938-48. His father a Zionist activist escaped from Russia to USA after the 1905 revolt, dreamt to immigrate to Israel all is life, In 1920 visited Palestine (Israel) with 10 year-old Shmaryhu. 1926 after his father’s death 16 year-old Shmaryhu made “Aliya” on his own, studied at Herzliya Gymnasium, was active in the, “Hebrew speak Hebrew” movement. Joined the Mahnot Olim youth Movement, went to a kibbutz, after a short visit to USA he returned with the awareness that only Israel and the Kibbutz life fitted him. In 1938 he was mobilized into the Mossad. His American passport allowed him free movement in Europe, better than the other Mossad activists. In 1940 bought the Darien II for the Mossad. Returned to Israel, Was in hiding under false indenty during 1941-45. Arriving in Italy in 45 as a soldier in the Jewish brigade, he sent the first aliya beth ships from Bari. The British police found out of his real indenty and he escaped to Milano. Shmarya didn’t get along with Yehudah Arazi, Mossad commander for Italy. went to France became commander of Mossad Marseilles “station”. Amon other ships he "loaded" the Exodus 1947 . After Israel's independence, he returned to his Kibbutz Bith Hashita, killed in a work accident at the olive factory.
