The U.S. Southern states or The South, also known as Dixie, is perhaps the most distinctive region of the United States, with its own unique historical perspective, customs and cuisine. There is some overlap with The Southwest and the Mid-Atlantic States.
As defined by the Census Bureau, the Southern region of the United States includes 16 states, and is split into three smaller units, or divisions: The South Atlantic StatesThe South Atlantic States form one of the nine divisions within the United States that are formally recognized by that country's census bureau. The division includes eight states Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virgin, which are Delaware, FloridaFlorida is a southern state in the United States. It is known as the Sunshine State. Florida" is a Spanish adjective which means "flowery". It was discovered by Spanish explorers during the Easter season, which is called Pascua Florida in Spanish. Postal, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia (plus the District of Columbia); the East South Central States of Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee; and the West South Central States of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
The largest city in the region is Houston, Texas. Other important cities include Dallas, San Antonio, New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Louisville, Miami, and Jacksonville, Florida.
