The University of Montreal (Université de Montréal, UdeM for short) is one of four universities in Montreal, Quebec. It is Quebec and Canada's second largest research institution, allocating close to $200 million to research conducted in more than 150 research centres. It is also the second largest French language university in the world, after the Sorbonne in Paris. Nearly 55,000 students attend undergraduate and graduate degrees there.
The institution's large campus, dominated by the imposing tower of the main building, is located on the northern slope of Mount Royal in Côte-des-Neiges.

The main building was designed by the noted architect Ernest Cormier. It is mainly in the Art Deco style, with a touch of the International style.
The university is planning to open a campus in Laval, Quebec, just north of Montreal, in 2006. It will be that city's first university campus, and is planned for the area around the future Montmorency metro station, where a high school and the Montmorency Cégep are also located. [1]
