The University of Vienna was the cradle of the Austrian School of economics. The founders of this school who studied here included Carl Menger, Eugen von Böhm-BawerkEugen von Bohm-Bawerk ( February 12, 1851 August 27, 1914) made important contributions to the development of Austrian economics. Trained in the University of Vienna as a lawyer where he read Carl Menger's Principles of Economics, and though he never stud, Friedrich von WieserFriedrich von Wieser ( July 10, 1851 July 22, 1926) was an early member of the Austrian School of economics. Born in Vienna the son of a high official in the War Ministry, he first trained in sociology and law. He was the brother-in-law of another promine, Joseph SchumpeterJoseph Alois Schumpeter ( February 8, 1883 January 8, 1950) was one of the greatest 20th century economists and one of the best read. Born in Trest (then part of Austria-Hungary, now in the Czech Republic), he began his career studying under the great Aus, Ludwig von MisesLudwig von Mises ( September 29, 1881, Lwow October 10, 1973) was a notable economist and a major influence on the modern Libertarian movement. He was born in Austria-Hungary and subsequently taught at the University of Vienna in the years 1913 to 1934, w and Friedrich Hayek.
The University of Vienna (as all universities and academies in Austria) featured an innovative system of democratic representation. Power inside the university was shared equally among the three pressure groups: students (the largest), junior faculty and senior professors. All groups had the right to send representatives to boards that then took votes on almost all issues. While guaranteeing that all groups had equal chances to bring up changes in the university, some argue that it led to corruption, especially in the nomination of people into prestigious positions.
The present government of Wolfgang SchüsselWolfgang Schussel (born June 7, 1945) is a Conservative Austrian politician. He has been Federal Chancellor of Austria (" Bundeskanzler") since 2000. Born in Vienna, Schussel attended a well-known Catholic grammar school for boys in Vienna (the Schottengy enacted a reform of the universitary system in Austria, leading to a concentration of power with the senior professors, the introduction of a board of directors and tuition fees.
