Valeri Nikolayevich Kubasov ( Russian: Валерий Николаевич Кубасов; born January 7, 1935 in Vyazniki ) was a Soviet cosmonaut who flew on two missions in the Soyuz programme as a flight engineer: Soyuz 6 and Soyuz 19 (the Apollo-Soyuz mission), and commanded Soyuz 36 in the Intercosmos programme. He was also involved in the development of the Mir space station. He retired from the Soviet space program in March 1993 .

Kubasov seems to have cheated death twice during his space career. He was part of the crew that was originally intended to fly Soyuz 2Soyuz 2 was an unpiloted spacecraft in the Soyuz family intended to perform a docking manoeuvre with Soyuz 3. Although the two craft approached closely, the docking did not take place. This mission was the subject of an artistic "reconstruction" by Joan F, which was found to have the same faulty parachute sensor that resulted in Vladimir KomarovVladimir Mikhailovich Komarov ( Russian: ; March 16, 1927 April 24, 1967) was a Soviet cosmonaut. He was the first human who died during a space mission, on Soyuz 1. He was born in Moscow, USSR (now Russia). He was selected to become a cosmonaut in 1960 w's death on Soyuz 1Soyuz 1 ( Russian 1, Union 1 was part of the Soviet Union's space program and was launched into orbit on April 23, 1967, carrying a single cosmonaut, Colonel Vladimir Mikhailovich Komarov, who was killed when the spacecraft crashed after return to Earth. and was later launched without a crew. Later, he was grounded for medical reasons before the Soyuz 11Soyuz 11 succeeded in completing the mission that Soyuz 10 had failed at carrying cosmonauts to live on the world's first space station, Salyut 1. Cosmonauts Georgi Dobrovolski, Viktor Patsayev, and Vladislav Volkov spent three weeks testing the Salyut's flight. The back-up crew for that mission was killed when the capsule was accidentally depressurised by a faulty valve.

He was later deputy director of RKK Energia.
