Vandercook Lake is an unincorporated community located in Summit Township, Jackson County, Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,809.

1 Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.3 km˛ (4.8 mi˛). 11.8 km˛ (4.6 mi˛) of it is land and 0.5 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 4.00% water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 4,809 people, 1,847 households, and 1,346 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 407.2/km˛ (1,054.1/mi˛). There are 1,935 housing units at an average density of 163.8/km˛ (424.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.13% White, 1.19% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. 2.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,847 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families. Precise definitions vary historically and between and within cultures, but it has been an important concept as a socially sanctioned bond between people who (usually) are living together, 11.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% are non-families. 23.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.5 males.
