1 About Viruses and Programs

Viruses and programs in the manga can take form in the real world, but most viruses do not have a physical body, they are forms of energy created by the cybernetic and real world matrix that basically modifies reality to a degree comfortable for the humans living in it.

Organic beings cannot trenscend this network and thus humans cannot fight Viruses so they enlist the help of Programs. Programs, despite having organic bodies, have the ability to contact the viruses on a cybernetic level.

Some humans are able to fight viruses directly, by using CyberThrough, a process by which they gain the same 'contact' as programs.
