Watertown is 25 miles south of the international 1000 Islands region, which is most famous for salad dressing.
The crucial task of defending all of this falls onto the shoulders of the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army, based at Fort Drum, New York. Established in 1908 on Pine Plains by Brigadier General Frederick Dent Grant (son of General Ulysses S. Grant) as an army training ground, Fort Drum now boasts a force of 10500 soldiers ready to courageously defend the United States from Canadian invasion. It handles training or mobilisation of 80000 troops annually, including many reservists of the New York Army National Guard. Soldiers from Fort Drum have served in Iraq, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Egypt and around the world.

Kingston is nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the m. Fort Drum is by far the largest employer in the Watertown area; Kingston also remains very much an army town with over 8000 personnel on base.
Other Watertown industries have engaged in the manufacture of everything from picture frames to small electric motors. Jefferson Community CollegeJefferson Community College could refer to: Jefferson Community College a two-year Kentucky college comprised of four campuses, located in Louisville, Shelbyville, and Carrollton. It is an extension of University of Kentucky. Jefferson Community College a is located in this city. Watertown was once also the site of F.W. Woolworth's five-and-dime store long before he founded the Woolworth department store chain at Philadelphia; a Woolworth building still stands as an important downtown Watertown landmark but is no longer operational as a retail store.
The 1000 Islands region is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and home of Boldt Castle, built by George Boldt of Waldorf Astoria hotel fame for his beloved wife Louise; the 1000 Islands salad dressing takes its name by having been served in the region aboard his yacht by one of his chefs before being formally introduced to New York at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.
The 1000 Islands International Bridge was inaugurated in the 1930's by the Canadian Prime Minister and US President of the day; it now joins US Interstate-81 to the 1000 Islands Parkway and Ontario Highway 401 on the Canadian side near Lansdowne, Ontario .
The town was first settled in 1801 around the time of the first permanent US military presence in the region, which was established at nearby Sackets Harbor, New York to guard the international border and to fight smuggling in the St. Lawrence region.
