The town operates two libraries, nine elementary schools, two intermediate schools, and two high schools. There are also other private elementary and high schools in the town, most of which are parochial schools.
The school district is divided in two by Ratzer Road, with the north side attending Wayne Hills High School and the south side attending Wayne Valley High School .
Theunis Dey Elementary school services the region enclosed by Route 23, Ratzer Rd, and a point on Black Oak Ridge Road.Wayne is home to Drake's, a company that is owned by the IBC. Toys "" Us' corporate headquaters is located in Wayne. The GAF Materials Corporation also has its world headquaters in Wayne.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 65.2 km² (25.2 mi²). 61.7 km² (23.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.44% water.
Wayne is home to several lakes. Some of the larger lakes are Pines Lake and Packanack Lake .
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 54,069 people, 18,755 households, and 14,366 families residing in the township. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.19.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $83,651, and the median income for a family is $95,114. Males have a median income of $61,271 versus $39,835 for females. The per capita income for the township is $35,349. 2.8% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
