William (Bill) Cox (born April 1, 1936 in Hobart, Tasmania) is a prominent member of Tasmania's judiciary. He is the Governor-designate of Tasmania.

He was educated at Xavier College in Melbourne and the University of Tasmania.

He was admitted to the bar in 1960, appointed a magistrate in 1976, and became a Queen's Counsel in 1978.

He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Tasmania in 1982, and has been the state's Chief Justice since 1995. In 1999, Justice Cox was made Companion of the Order of Australia.

He is currently serving as Lieutenant-Governor and Chief Justice of Tasmania . In August 20042004 is a leap year starting on Thursday (the link is to a full 2004 calendar), and has also been designated the: International Year of Rice International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition Elections are to be held in 73 co, he became acting Governor of Tasmania upon the resignation of Richard ButlerRichard Butler (born May 13, 1942) served as an Australian diplomat, United Nations weapons inspector, and Governor of Tasmania. Life and career Butler was born in Coolah in rural New South Wales, but grew up in Sydney and was educated at Sydney Universit, and in November it was announced he had been appointed to the role fulltime.

Justice Cox is married to Jocelyn with three children.

Justice Cox is only the second Tasmanian-born Governor in the state's history. The other was Sir Guy GreenSir Guy Green was the Governor of Tasmania from 1995 to 2003. In 2003, following the controversy of Peter Hollingworth's past handling of child abuse allegations, Green became the acting Governor General of Australia because by then he was the seniormost.
