" Yat" refers to people in New Orleans who speak a particular dialect of English, also called " Yat ." The name derives from the common use amongst said peoples of the greeting, "Where y'at?" (Where you at?), which is a way of asking, "How are you today?"

Another interesting and well-known (outside of New Orleans) Yat saying is "making groceries" (going grocery shopping).

Although within New Orleans, the term often means speakers of the Yat dialect, around the rest of Louisiana, it is often used as a colloquial demonym for any person from New Orleans.
