Giani Zail Singh ( May 5 1916 December 25 1994) was the first Sikh president of India.

Born in a small village named Sandhwan , near Kot Kapura to Mata Ind Kaur and Bhai Kishan Singh. He was the chief minister of Punjab from 1972 until 1977, the home affairs minister of India from 1980 until 1982, and the president of India from 1982 until 1987. He was also chairman of the Non-Aligned MovementThe Non-Aligned Movement or NAM is an international organization of over 100 states which consider themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. They represent 55 per cent of the planet's people and nearly two-thirds of the UN's me during his presidency, from 1982 until 1986.
