Zaraysk is a town in Moscow Region, Russia, center of the Zaraysky district , which is situated about 100 km south from Moscow.

Zaraysk stands on the right bank of the Osetr river (right confluent of Oka river). About 26 000 inhabitants. Is known from the 13th century: first as a village Krasny, later as a town of Novogorodok-upon-Osetr. From 1528 the town was called The Town of Nicola Zarazsky and only by the beginning of 17th century it received its present name of Zaraysk.

In those times Zaraysk was one of the fortresses, appearing as a part of the Great Abatis Border - a fortified line of felled trees, barricades, fortresses, ditches etc., which were build by Russians as a protection against the Mongolo-Tatars hordes.

Before entering the Moscow princedom Zaraysk was part of the Ryazan princedom . In the 19th century in was also a part of the Ryazan Region , and although in the soviet times it was transferred to the Moscow Region, the architectural style of buildings in Zaraysk and the dialect, used in this town, are both of Ryazan type.

In the 1531 a stone citadel ( kremlin) was built on a place of the former wooden citadel. In the 1533Events January 25 King Henry VIII of England marries Anne Boleyn, his second Queen consort. The citadel is very small and has a rectangular shape, with 6 towers and gates in 2 of them. 5 cathedrals and churches remain in Zaraysk.

At present time Zaraysk is an industrial center of the district, with polygraphy, building materials, foodstuff and footwear industry.
