Zumtobel Lighting Group was founded in 1950 by Dr. Walter Zumtobel as "Elektrogeräte- und Kunstharzpreßwerk W. Zumtobel KG" in Dornbirn, Austria. The company produces ballasts for the newly introduced fluorescent light fittings.

Thorn Lighting was founded in 1928 by Jules Thorn . In 1981 Thorn introduces the 2D compact fluorescent lamp, an energy saving replacement for the ordinary light bulb. In 1993 Thorn Lighting was acquired from Thorn EMI in leveraged management buy-out.
